To make your post private
Simply go to the post editor and click the edit button next to visibility on your right. You have two options, one to be password protected (simply add your new password) or private only (only the user from the blog will be able to see it).
To make your self hosting WordPress blog private
Just install “Members Only Plugin” and your blog will be only viewable to the login user. If not logged in the user will be redirected to the WordPress login page or any pages of your choice.

May i request you to elaborate on Private Posts? Who are able to see them? And what are the ways in which password protected posts can be made accessible?

Of course Neil. Wwhen you make your blog post private, the post is visible only to you, other editors or admins. The best way to make your password protected posts accessible that I would I recommend is to use the “Only Member” plugin. This allows you to make your blog only viewable to visitors that are logged in. If a visitor is not logged in, they will be redirected to the WordPress login page. You can also protect your feeds whilst allowing registered users access to them. I recommend also to watch this video about private posts on WordPress TV http://wordpress.tv/2009/01/14/setting-your-pos...
